The Journal

The ZLW has a longstanding tradition. It was founded in 1929, in the pioneering time of aviation. Today it is an example for an international publication in a very specialized field of law. Compared with publications in other fields the number of copies produced appears small, but in fact the ZLW is one of the big journals in its own field. It is the only publication of this kind in all Germany and one of about half a dozen worldwide.

It is edited in three languages in a quarterly rhythm by the Institute of Air and Space Law at the University of Cologne. The ZLW publishes contributions on German and international air traffic law, international space law as well as legislation, conference reports, judicial decisions on book reviews in these fields.

From the start the ZLW has been subsidized by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and digital Infrastructure. Important for the legal work of this ministry is the fact that the ZLW collects and analyses the entire international material in the field. Hereby it is important that the ZLW is edited by a University Institute possessing the know-how and having the necessary neutrality and independence which is imperative for this type of work.
